Attendees at “Buying a Racehorse,” the New Owner Seminar at Del Mar Racetrack on Saturday, enjoyed expert presentations about the various ways of becoming a racehorse owner. Included in the program were segments on buying at auction, claiming a horse, private purchases, and partnerships and syndicates. Following the initial panel presentations, there was a lively question and answer session.
The seminar was moderated by Todd Schrupp, TVG Racing Analyst.
Ryan Mahan, senior auctioneer at Keeneland and director of auctions for Barretts Sales, Ocala Breeders Sales and the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society, entertained the audience with a sample of his auctioning routine before addressing some important things to keep in mind when buying at horse sales. In addition to covering the basics of how a horse auction works, he cautioned newcomers to seek the advice of knowledgeable agents and trainers before bidding on a horse.
Panelist Ron Ellis, a well-known southern California trainer and television racing commentator, explained the ins and outs of claiming horses including licensing, regulations, claiming levels, and race day procedures.
Rollin Baugh of Baugh International bloodstock agency provided an overview on acquiring a Thoroughbred through a private purchase transaction. He also reviewed the various methods for researching a pedigree and emphasized the importance of getting expert advice, particularly when physically inspecting horses prior to sale.
Jeff Lifson, Executive Vice President of Mid-West Operations for West Point Thoroughbreds, spoke about the different types of Thoroughbred partnerships and syndicates. He covered the pros and cons of syndicates of various sizes as well as smaller, less formal partnerships.
The seminar, which was hosted by TOC, Barretts Sales and Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, was attended by over 50 people. Following the panel discussion, attendees were taken by tram to the Barretts Sales barns, where they had a close-up look at horses entered in that evening’s paddock sale. Presenters Kim McCarthy and Andy Havens were on hand at the Barretts sales area to show horses and answer questions.
